Health Benefits of Kefir

Before we delve deeper into the health benefits, let’s talk about what kefir actually is…

Kefir is a cultured, fermented drink that has a similar taste and texture to that of yoghurt. Similar to its sister-beverage, Kombucha, Kefir is made using a ‘starter’ that combines yeast, protein and bacteria.

Traditionally, kefir is made with dairy milk however it can also be made with plant-based milk alternatives such as oat, rice and/or coconut. Some kefir is made with coconut water which results in a thinner texture.

Kefir has increased in popularity over the past few years mostly due to the growing awareness of its many health benefits. We’ve touched on a few of these benefits already including the fact it is loaded with nutrients and live probiotics. Some of the key nutrients include B vitamins, potassium (beneficial for heart health) and calcium (important for strong and healthy bones).

Kefir has become very popular amongst those who experience digestive complaints due to the impressive probiotic content. Probiotics help to support growth of healthy bacteria in the gut which in turn, prevents any imbalances (dysbiosis) from occurring. As well as being a fantastic preventative, kefir can also aid to relieve symptoms in many gut-related health conditions. Some of these conditions include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), diarrhoea and urinary tract infections.

In addition to its vast digestive benefits, there have been studies to suggest that Kefir has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. There have also been studies conducted to indicate that kefir is helpful in lowering cholesterol and helping to support immune function.

Ways to consume Kefir

Now that you know just how good kefir is for your health, let’s talk about how you can incorporate this drink into your diet.

  • First of all, there’s our new Nexba Kefir Sparkling Water with a seriously delicious & naturally sweet strawberry and peach flavour. An easy way to ensure you are getting in a healthy dose of kefir!
  • Add kefir to a smoothie. Any smoothie recipes that have a base of yoghurt or ice cream can be swapped for the much more beneficial, kefir.
  • Have it with cereal in place of milk/yoghurt. We recommend finding a delicious gluten free and refined sugar free granola (better yet, make your own!) and serve with fresh berries and kefir for a nutrient packed start to the day.
  • Use it in baking. Any recipes for baked goods that contain yoghurt or buttermilk can be replaced with kefir.  You can also specifically search for recipes that contain kefir such as bread, pancakes and waffles.
  • Use it in tzatziki in place of greek yoghurt or mixed with lemon and olive oil for a simple yet satisfying salad dressing.
  • Make a kefir nice-cream! Nice cream is a healthy alternative to ice cream that is made using frozen banana. Adding kefir will not only help to create a smooth and creamy texture, but it will also enhance the nutritional value.
